General thoracic surgeon J. Timothy Sherwood, M.D., joined Virginia Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Mary Washington Hospital in 2007. Board certified in both thoracic and general surgery, Dr. Sherwood performs the full range of thoracic procedures. He has extensive experience in lung, esophageal, chest, airway and foregut surgeries.
Dr. Sherwood also remains on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as assistant professor of surgery. He gained vast experience while on staff at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he served as attending thoracic surgeon, chief of esophageal surgery and led the minimally invasive thoracic surgery program. He performed the first VATS lobectomy there.
Dr. Sherwood completed his residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Case Western Reserve University Hospital, the University of Colorado Hospital and National Jewish Medical Center for Respiratory Disease in Denver. He earned his medical degree at SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. He earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University.
